Kirby Drive, one of Houston’s most famous roads, weaves through River Oaks and beyond. But who was Kirby? Many assume it’s named after John Kirby Allen, one of Houston's founders. However, the truth is different! 🙌

The “Kirby” in Kirby Drive is actually John Henry Kirby, a Houston lumber baron whose company, Kirby Lumber, controlled over a million acres of East Texas timberland! 🌳🪚 His influence was massive, and Kirby Drive serves as a tribute to his industrial empire.

Westheimer Road: From Flour Trader to Community Leader 🌾🏫

Stretching across Houston, Westheimer Road is another iconic thoroughfare. This road is named after Michael Louis Westheimer, a German immigrant who arrived in Houston in 1859. 🇩🇪

Westheimer started out trading flour but later became a beloved local figure. He even opened a school on his property, allowing kids to attend for free! The road leading to his farm became known as "the road to Westheimer’s place," and the rest is history! 📜✨

Harrisburg Boulevard: A Founder’s Namesake 🚢🏞️

Named after the short-lived settlement of Harrisburg, this street carries the legacy of John Richardson Harris, a New Yorker who founded the community in 1826. After sailing to Texas, Harris established Harrisburg along Buffalo Bayou. 🌊⚓

Though the town was eventually annexed by Houston in 1926, Harrisburg Boulevard still bears the name, commemorating this early Houston settlement! 🏙️
